Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has recovered approximately 98% of the digital assets affected by a large-scale cyberattack on October 29, 2026, and has expanded its Proof of Reserves program from 10 to 44 tokens. This was stated in an official company announcement published on November 4.

According to Binance, the company has set aside its own funds in an amount exceeding 100% of the value of the assets needed to compensate for the losses. Reserves are being replenished through the purchase of the relevant cryptocurrencies on the open market and via over-the-counter (OTC) transactions.

The remaining 2% of the assets consist primarily of tokens with relatively low liquidity. Acquiring them requires additional time, as large transactions involving such instruments can significantly impact market prices.

The total value of digital assets stolen in the October 29 cyberattack was estimated at approximately $6.3 billion. The incident was one of the largest thefts on record in the history of the cryptocurrency industry.

According to an investigation reported by Reuters on November 3, the attackers gained access to the computer systems of several Binance engineers. Malware, fake job offers, and social engineering techniques were used to compromise the devices.

The access gained allowed the attackers to interfere with internal cryptocurrency wallet management processes and carry out a series of unauthorized transfers. In response to the incident, Binance, in collaboration with its partners, managed to freeze a significant portion of the stolen assets.

While restoring its reserves, the company conducted an additional audit of its customer fund coverage. A new Proof of Reserves snapshot was taken on November 4 at 00:00 UTC and covered 44 cryptocurrencies, up from 10 in the previous audit.

Thus, the number of digital assets included in the reserve verification program has more than quadrupled. Binance reported that preparing a complete cryptographic proof using zero-knowledge proof technology requires approximately 50–60 hours of computation. Once this is complete, users will be able to independently verify whether their balances for the covered cryptocurrencies are backed by reserves at a ratio of at least 1:1.

However, the published reserve snapshot and the subsequent cryptographic verification do not constitute a full-fledged independent financial audit of the entire company, as they do not automatically cover all possible liabilities and corporate risks of the exchange.

Binance continues to gradually resume digital asset withdrawal operations and upgrade its security system. The company stated that the financial consequences of the cyberattack will be covered using its own resources, not customer funds.

This large-scale incident has once again brought to the forefront issues within the cryptocurrency industry regarding the security of centralized platforms, the storage of private keys, and transparency in safeguarding client liabilities.

The restoration of Binance’s reserves could be one factor in stabilizing confidence in centralized cryptocurrency exchanges. At the same time, how the situation unfolds will depend on the results of the investigation, the restoration of the platform’s full functionality, and the effectiveness of the new security measures.

Founded in 2017, Binance is one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges. The company provides spot and derivatives trading of digital assets, cryptocurrency custody, institutional services, and other fintech services.
