An IMF mission will be in Ukraine from Jan. 29 to Feb. 12, the Fund’s country representative office said on Jan. 17. During its visit, the mission will negotiate a new standby loan agreement with Ukraine, said Max Alier, the IMF Resident Representative in Ukraine. The previous standby program officially terminated in end-2012. Earlier this month, the head of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) said the mission would arrive on Jan. 24.

Alexander Paraschiy: Interestingly, the outlined period of the mission’s work coincides with the period of Ukraine’s repayment of three IMF tranches scheduled for 1Q13 (Jan. 30, Feb. 7 and Feb. 12, for a total amount of USD 1.32 bln). As we highlighted earlier, the smoothness of building up NBU reserves, as well as local currency stability, will depend on the results of these IMF negotiations (refer to our Dec. 26 note on the hryvnia). The bottom line is that mid-February will be a critical checkpoint for Ukraine’s currency.
