First Deputy Prime Minister Serhiy Arbuzov and Finance Minister Yuriy Kolobov departed for the U.S. on Jan. 15 on a four-day trip to recruit investors into the Ukrainian economy. They are conducting a series of seminars on Ukraine’s investment appeal, said Arbuzov’s press office, as reported by the Weekly Mirror news site.

Zenon Zawada: With a meeting with IMF officials scheduled for Jan. 24, the Ukrainian government is trying to find supplementary sources of capital to avoid painful measures being demanded such as raising household natural gas tariffs or relaxing the hryvnia exchange rate. Arbuzov is demonstrating a seriousness in dealing with the fiscal trouble that was missing in the previous Cabinet led by Prime Minister Mykola Azarov. Regardless of whether the trip is successful, the initiative taken by Arbuzov is a good sign that the Ukrainian government is seriously considering meeting IMF demands and boosts the likelihood that a loan agreement will be reached
