Ukraine central bank expects 2014 C/A deficit at 3-4% of GDP
The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) expects the 2014 current account deficit will account for 3-4% of GDP, compared to 9% of GDP in 2013, its head Valeriia Gontareva told the Interfax-Ukrayina news agency in a July 16 interview.
Alexander Paraschiy: The NBU hasn’t surprised anyone with this estimate. We are observing a steady tendency of shrinking imports, along with volatile exports due to the war with Russia. In particular, non-energy imports are demonstrating steady two-digit declines (-20.9% yoy in May) on the back of the devaluation effect. If the tendency we are observing in external accounts continues, we see high chances for the C/A deficit to be even lower. We project a 2014 C/A deficit of 2.3% of GDP.
