Ukraine’s biggest coke producer and Metinvest subsidiary Avdiyivka Coke (AVDK UK) was bombarded again on Nov. 5, the Interfax-Ukrayina news agency reported, citing the company’s press release. As a result of the bombardment, some infrastructure and auxiliary assets of the plant were damaged, and two people were injured. The main production assets of the plant were not affected. The bombardment was the second this week after the Nov. 1 attacks damaged infrastructure and supporting assets.

The Avdiyivka Coke plant is located about 10 km away from the Donetsk airport, where daily battles continue to be waged. It suffered its first attacks in late July and August 2014, during which its power supply was damaged.

Roman Topolyuk: In September, Avdiyivka Coke announced that it has started to relaunch coke production that was suspended in late July. The renewed bombardments of its production site will be a hurdle for the company to get back to a normal operating regime. Avdiyivka Coke was the most important provider of coke for Metinvest in 2013 (67% of coke consumed by the group). Instability at Adviyivka look like one of the biggest impediments to Metinvest to improving its capacity load at its steel plants.
